The Family Scam Shield: How to Protect Parents and Older Relatives From Scams and Fraud

In 2025 alone, India recorded over 30,000 complaints which cost victims nearly ₹3,000 crore. Indians lost an estimated ₹22,495 crore to cyber fraud in 2025, with complaints up 24% from 2024. In Nagpur, 60% of all cyber fraud victims in 2025 were senior citizens.

As a daughter with senior parents, the thought that your parents could be victims of such financial frauds is deeply unsettling. You may not be able to be there every time they get a suspicious call, but you can help them be better prepared.

Retirees tend to have savings sitting in accounts, less familiarity with how digital fraud actually works, and, most importantly, no one in the room to say "wait" before they act. That last part is where you can take over and help the seniors in your family. You can't out-argue a scammer mid-call, but you can change what happens before the call ever comes in.

Build These Safeguards as a Family

Begin with educating your parents. Here is what you can do:

  1. Agree on a "check with family first" rule for anything urgent: Most scams work by creating panic, such as threats of arrest, frozen accounts, and expiring investment offers. Agree in advance that no financial decision gets made the same hour it's demanded, no exceptions.
  2. Set up a shared password or code phrase: If someone calls pretending to be a relative in trouble who needs urgent money, a pre-agreed code word can help them confirm it’s really them. This can also protect them from voice-cloning and deepfake scams.
  3. Walk through what a real bank or police call sounds like: Neither ever asks for OTPs or passwords, nor demands instant transfers over the phone. No Indian law enforcement agency conducts arrests or interrogations over video call.
  4. Check registration before any investment: Before your parents invest with anyone, look up the person or platform on SEBI's website. If they are not a SEBI-registered Investment Adviser or Research Analyst, that alone is a red flag.
  5. Add transaction alerts and a lower UPI limit for large payments: Most banks allow you to set daily transfer limits. A lower limit for elderly account holders introduces a natural pause before large sums can be withdrawn.
  6. Know the numbers to report to immediately: If money has already been sent, call the National Cyber Crime Helpline at 1930 right away, because faster reporting significantly improves the odds of freezing the funds before they are moved further.
  7. Revisit this conversation periodically, not just once: Scam scripts change constantly, which means this isn't a conversation to have once and consider done. It's worth revisiting every few months, not as a lecture, but as an ordinary check-in, like asking about their health.

Conclusion

In most Indian families, senior parent’s don’t live with their daughters, so you may not be able to screen scam calls for your parents. But if you talk to them about safety measures, they will not fall prey to scammers' efforts.  All it takes is a check-first rule, a code word, a lower transfer limit, and no scammer can be successful in their attempt to steal your parents' money.
