How to Evaluate a Specialised Investment Fund Before Investing?

Specialised Investment Funds (SIFs) are gaining visibility in India. SIF assets under management reached ₹17,858 crore at the end of June 2026, up 29% from ₹13,814 crore in May, while monthly inflows increased to ₹3,782 crore from ₹1,396 crore. (Business Today)

The numbers indicate growing participation, but they do not establish whether a particular specialised investment fund is appropriate for an individual investor. SIF strategies can use relatively flexible portfolio approaches, including permitted derivative positions. That is why careful evaluation is important before committing capital.

Why Should You Evaluate a SIF Investment Before Investing?

A SIF sits within SEBI's mutual fund regulatory framework but can follow strategies that differ from conventional mutual funds, including limited unhedged derivative exposure.

Under SEBI's framework, SIF strategies may take exposure of up to 25% of net assets in approved exchange-traded derivatives for reasons other than portfolio rebalancing and hedging. (SEBI)

Investors also need to consider the higher entry requirement. The aggregate investment across the SIF strategies offered by an AMC must generally be at least ₹10 lakh at the PAN level, subject to applicable exceptions. (SEBI)

Therefore, the decision requires more than looking at returns or recent SIF investment flows.

Key Factors to Evaluate Before Choosing a Specialised Investment Fund

Investment Objective

Start with the objective stated in the scheme's Investment Strategy Information Document. Understand whether the strategy seeks capital appreciation, income, active asset allocation or another stated outcome and whether that objective matches your needs.

Investment Strategy

This is particularly important for a SIF. Check how the strategy builds long positions, uses derivatives, manages short exposure and changes allocations.

Portfolio Composition

Review where your money is actually being invested. Consider asset classes, sectors, individual securities, derivatives, credit quality where applicable and concentration levels.

Fund Manager Experience

SIF strategies can involve active allocation and derivative decisions, so understanding the investment team's experience is relevant.

SEBI's sound-track-record route requires a mutual fund establishing a SIF to have operated for at least three years and maintained average AUM of at least ₹10,000 crore during the immediately preceding three years, along with specified regulatory conditions. SEBI also provides an alternate eligibility route based partly on the experience of designated investment professionals. (SEBI)
This regulatory eligibility should not, however, be treated as an assurance of future investment performance.

Historical Performance

Where a meaningful track record exists, examine performance across different market conditions rather than focusing on one strong period. Compare returns with the stated benchmark where relevant and assess volatility and downside periods.

Since SIFs are a relatively new investment category, some strategies may not yet have long performance histories, making strategy evaluation particularly important.

For perspective, hybrid investment strategies accounted for ₹12,822 crore, or 72% of total SIF AUM, in June 2026, while equity-oriented strategies accounted for ₹5,036 crore. (Economic Times)

Expense Ratio and Costs

Check the expense ratio and any applicable load, transaction-related expenses, and other disclosed costs. Higher costs reduce the returns ultimately available to investors, irrespective of whether the portfolio produces positive or negative returns.

Investment Horizon

Assess whether you can remain invested for the period required by the strategy. Some strategies may experience volatility or require time for their investment approach to play out, depending on market conditions.

How to Determine Whether a SIF Fits Your Portfolio?

Financial Goals

Link the investment to a clearly identified financial goal rather than investing solely because the SIF category has recently attracted inflows.

Existing Portfolio Allocation

Review what you already hold. Adding another equity-heavy or hybrid strategy may unintentionally increase exposure to assets, sectors or risk factors already present in your portfolio.

Diversification Needs

A specialised investment fund may add strategies or exposures that differ from conventional holdings. However, diversification can reduce concentration risk; it cannot eliminate investment or market risk.

Risk Appetite

Understand potential losses, derivative exposure, market volatility and other scheme-specific risks before investing. The higher ₹10 lakh threshold should not be interpreted as an indication that a SIF is inherently less risky.

Time Horizon

Your investment horizon should be compatible with the strategy's underlying assets, liquidity provisions and stated approach. Avoid investing money that may be required for near-term financial commitments.

Benefits of Evaluating a Specialised Investment Fund Carefully

A structured evaluation can help investors:

  • Understand exactly how the SIF investment strategy works.

  • Identify risks arising from derivatives, asset allocation or concentration.

  • Compare the strategy with existing portfolio holdings.

  • Assess whether costs are reasonable for the strategy being followed.

  • Avoid making decisions based mainly on recent performance or industry inflows.

  • Match the investment with financial goals, risk appetite and investment horizon.

Make the Strategy Fit the Portfolio

A SIF can provide access to investment approaches that may not be available in the same form through conventional mutual funds, but greater strategy flexibility can also require greater investor understanding.

The phrase special investment fund is sometimes used informally, but investors should refer to the regulatory term Specialised Investment Fund (SIF) when reviewing official scheme documents.
