A systematic investment plan (SIP) works through regular scheduled investments, but an occasional debit may fail. At the same time, investors need to pay attention to failed debits because they may result in return charges.
Recent industry numbers also require careful interpretation. In April 2026, 51.29 lakh SIP accounts were discontinued or matured compared with 50.71 lakh new registrations, taking the stoppage ratio to about 101%. (Financial Express)
Importantly, this measure includes both discontinued SIPs and SIPs that naturally completed their tenure, so it should not be interpreted as a measure of failed instalments alone.
What Does "SIP Instalment Failed" Mean?
A SIP instalment failed status means the scheduled amount for a mutual fund SIP investment could not be successfully debited and invested on the intended date.
This does not mean that the money already invested in the scheme is cancelled or withdrawn. Existing units generally remain invested and continue to be exposed to market movements.
Common Reasons Why a SIP Instalment Failed
Insufficient Bank Balance
One common reason is not having enough money in the linked account when the debit request is presented.
Expired or Cancelled Auto-Debit Mandate
The SIP may fail if the registered auto-debit mandate has expired, been cancelled or is no longer active.
Bank Account Closed or Frozen
If the linked account has been closed, frozen or restricted, the scheduled debit may not be processed.
UPI or NACH Mandate Issues
A UPI AutoPay or NACH mandate may fail because it has expired, been revoked, exceeded its approved limit or encountered another mandate-related issue.
Technical or Banking Network Errors
Temporary system outages or payment-network problems can occasionally prevent a transaction from being completed even when sufficient funds are available.
Debit Blocked by the Bank
Security restrictions, account-level controls or instructions blocking automatic debits may prevent the SIP amount from being deducted.
Holiday or Processing Delays
A scheduled transaction may sometimes be processed on the next applicable business day because of holidays or operational timelines. A processing delay should therefore not immediately be treated as a failed instalment.
What Happens If Your SIP Instalment Fails?
One failed instalment generally means that the scheduled investment for that particular cycle was not completed. Previously purchased mutual fund units remain unaffected.
However, repeated failures require attention. Under applicable guidelines, SIPs with three consecutive failed instalments for daily, weekly, fortnightly and monthly frequencies can be treated as ceased or discontinued. For other frequencies, two consecutive failures are sufficient. (The Hindu)
Are There Any Charges for a Failed SIP Instalment?
Charges depend on the reason for failure and the applicable payment or account terms.
Bank Charges
A failed auto-debit due to insufficient funds may result in a return charge.
AMC Policies
Mutual fund houses generally do not impose a penalty simply because one SIP contribution is missed, although investors should check the applicable scheme and transaction terms.
NACH Return Charges
These charges can apply when an auto-debit instruction is presented but cannot be completed, particularly because of insufficient funds or mandate-related issues.
Penalties, If Applicable
Repeated failures can become costly.
What Should You Do After a SIP Instalment Failed?
Check Your Bank Balance
Confirm whether sufficient money was available when the debit was attempted.
Verify Your Auto-Debit Mandate
Check whether the NACH or UPI mandate is active and whether its approved limit covers the SIP amount.
Update Bank Details if Required
If your account information has changed, update the registered details through the appropriate process before the next instalment date.
Contact Your Bank
If sufficient funds were available but the debit still failed, ask for the reason for the transaction failure and confirm whether any account restrictions apply.
Contact the AMC or Mutual Fund Distributor
You can also check the SIP registration and mandate status through the fund house or your authorised distributor.
Resume or Restart the SIP
If the SIP remains active, correcting the underlying issue may allow subsequent instalments to continue normally. If it has been discontinued after repeated failures, a fresh SIP registration may be required.
How to Avoid SIP Instalment Failures in the Future?
A few simple checks can reduce avoidable failures:
Maintain sufficient balance before the debit date.
Keep a small buffer above the SIP amount.
Track mandate expiry and validity.
Update account information promptly.
Review debit alerts and failed-transaction notifications.
Avoid scheduling several large debits without considering available balance.
Check the SIP status after changing payment details.
Does a Failed SIP Affect Your Investment Goals?
A single missed SIP is unlikely to determine a long-term financial outcome by itself. However, repeated missed contributions reduce the amount actually invested and may therefore affect the corpus accumulated over time.
Keep Your SIP Setup Ready for the Next Instalment
When a 'SIP instalment failed' message appears, identify the transaction reason before making changes to your investment strategy. Correcting the balance, mandate or account issue may be enough to restore future deductions.
